In a surprising turn of events, the earthquake warning system, now widely praised in Japan, took a significant step forward. Following the devastating Tainan earthquake earlier this year, which resulted in the loss of over a hundred lives, Sanlien Technology generously donated its indigenous earthquake warning system to 20 schools in the city.
Reports indicate that this innovative technology, capable of issuing alerts 8 to 10 seconds before an earthquake strikes by detecting seismic P-waves, has since been developed and implemented by Sanlien Technology. Created just a year after the 921 earthquake 15 years ago, this system allows people to shut off gas supplies and take cover, potentially saving lives and reducing casualties.
However, despite its potential life-saving capabilities, this monitoring invention remained largely overlooked in Taiwan. Surprisingly, other countries such as Japan and New Zealand quickly adopted the system. Japan, in particular, began widespread implementation in 2007, installing earthquake sensors nationwide and broadcasting alerts through television, mobile phones, and large outdoor screens.
This revelation not only highlights the innovative prowess of Taiwanese scientists but also underscores the need for recognition of local expertise. As this technology continues to safeguard lives abroad, it serves as a testament to the untapped potential within Taiwan’s scientific community.
